Windows 7 (Beta 64bit Ultimate) Installation

(I haven't been working too much on my game atm, just did a small bugfix, but won't post a new exe until I have something more concrete)

Anyway, for those who are having one of the various problems installing the Windows 7 beta, I thought I'd write (USING MY CLEAN INSTALL OF WIN7) my account on what went wrong during the installation and how I overcame them.

For many a user before me, and me being included in those users, the Win7 Installation freezes at "Completing Installation..." I read a bunch of stuff on the oh-so-great internets and this is what finally fixed it for me (dunno which of these were really necessary, so just typing everything I did):

- Disabling everything you can afford to in your bios (USB/AUDIO/ETC).
- During the first boot (after the first part of the installation) remove your INSTALL CD, EVERY USB/PS2 DEVICE AND TURN OFF YOUR MONITOR

For me, this helped me past the "Completing installation" freeze, but don't worry, we still have battles ahead of us!

Now you'll be stuck on a screen where you can input your user/computername without any input devices. So restart [PRESSING F8 AND CHOOSING 640x480 (VGA) mode, you'll thank me later] your computer connecting your mouse/keyboard.

After I inputted my username ETC and my CD-key, Mister Seven got stuck at the "Preparing your desktop" phase. This is where the above VGA mode came in handy and let me to my desktop. There. Clean install. Yet, there were problems to be faced.

If you're using ATI, like me, you might have some problems installing CCC (i.e. crashing during the installation). What I did is, I downloaded the Display Driver and CCC separately and installed the DD first, rebooted, and then installed CCC without crashing. Ah, one obstacle remaining.

Almost instantly after I had all my problems fixed and installed my updates, I started having random system crashing "YEAH! TY TY MS LOLI-CHAN-KAWAII-DES?!?)"#!". This is what fixed it for me:

Open Run... (Windows+R) and Run (pun intended?) it as an administrator. Insert this:

reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f

(Found it with some random googling, not sure who was the original author of this fix, but a google search would perhaps give credits to the original wise person.)

So there. Hopefully my installation experiences help someone out on the intrawebs as the intrawebs helped me.

So there, now my Win7 is working perfectly (with updates).

EDIT: For the record, I'm still using Beta Build 7000, but I'm planning on upgrading soon.
